Surf, skate, music & good vibes. This pretty much sums up nine action-packed days of competition at this year’s Australian Open of Surfing in Manly.
Dion Atkinson, from the relative unknown remote Seaford in South Australia went all the way and won the QS6000 Men’s final, which has set the 29 year-old up for another possible WCT qualification. Can he make it back to the big league?
By taking out the Australian Open of Surfing, Atkinson earned himself 6000 WQS points, US$25,000 along with a cool Tag Heuer watch. All this pushed him up to 3rd position on the International World Qualifying Series rankings.
Atkinson brought his A-game in the final to beat Leonardo Fiovaranti of Italy, who was certainly a worthy opponent, coming from another final finish in the previous WQS event in Newcastle a week ago. The young Italian didn’t find any decent waves and ended up with just 5.10 points compared to Atkinson’s 14.66 points.
To make it an all Aussie double, Victorian surfer Nikki Van Dijk overcame Hawaiian Malia Manuel to win the women’s title. She had kept her best performance for when she needed it most, in the final, posting a couple of excellent scores totalling 17.94 points (out of total 20) and gave no chance to the Hawaiian opponent. The Australian Open of Surfing crown means Nicky Van Dyke now leads the WQS ratings.
Until next year Manly..
